The Karnataka High Court has directed the immediate closure of the Pilikula Zoo (Pilikula Biological Park) in Mangaluru after expressing strong concern over the poor condition and alleged neglect of animals at the facility.
Judges took serious note of photographic evidence presented during a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by wildlife conservationist Bhuvan, which showed animals in unhygienic cages, contaminated water supplies, rusted enclosures, and signs of neglect. On seeing these images, the bench observed that if animals were in such a state, the zoo “must be shut immediately.”
The court questioned the continued operation of the zoo, noting its operating licence had expired in December 2025, and raised concerns over whether the facility was functioning without valid authorisation.
According to reports, several animal welfare and management issues have plagued the park in recent months, including suffering and illness among resident species. The High Court has warned the Karnataka government and authorities to take urgent action and has adjourned the matter for further hearing.

ಈ ಆದೇಶವು ವನ್ಯಜೀವಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಕ ಭುವನ್ ಅವರು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಹಿತಾಸಕ್ತಿ ದಾವೆ (PIL) ವಿಚಾರಣೆಯ ವೇಳೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಮೃಗಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಹಾಳಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗುತ್ತಿವೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಫೋಟೋಗಳನ್ನು ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ನಂತರ, ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶರು “ಇದಲ್ಲೇ ಮೃಗಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಬೇಕು” ಎಂದು ಗಂಭೀರ ಸೂಚನೆ ನೀಡಿದರು.
ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯವು ಮೃಗಾಲಯದ ಲೈಸೆನ್ಸ್ ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 2025ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮಾನವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಗಮನಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದು, ಮಿಥತ್ಯಾವಧಿಯ ನಂತರವೂ ಅದು ವಾಹನವಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕೇಳಿದೆ.
